LGVMA's GOOD NEWS!

Students write to LGVMA

I'm a senior veterinary student at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Canada. I was very pleased to hear about you and feel that I have to share how I heard about you just because its a good "out" story. I was at a job interview recently, feeling unusually comfortable chatting with my interviewer when it hit me that of all my interviews, I felt comfortable enough with this person to come out to them during our first meeting. So I did. And then he told me about you. It turns out he's Gay and a member (a proud one) of your organization. No wonder I was so at ease! So, glad to hear about you and find your website. I would appreciate a membership application.

I am a student at Ross Veterinary School, located on St. Kitts island in the West Indies. I formed an organization on campus here last semester open to anyone, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and open-minded. We have been basically a social club and organize trips and the like. One of the people in there gave me the LGVMA homepage and that is when I wrote the e-mail requesting information. There are about 13 members in the group right now and we would greatly appreciate copies of the last newsletter. We do our last year of rotations in the United States. Is there a way that members can contact those people in charge of groups at different veterinary schools?

As I am almost half way through my junior year here at Davis, I am seriously looking into job prospects and started to think how I might best handle the topic of a "significant other", when it comes up in interviews. I would like to propose an article or questionnaire on how currently practicing veterinarians have handled such a topic in interview situations or after being on the job. I have been in my current relationship for nine years and got married two years ago in a formal ceremony. Just about anyone who cares to know at school, knows that I am Gay, so it isn't a secret. Do you think an article could be written to address what others who have been through this think?

This is Laura Olson-Erbach, the Co-President of the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Club at the University of Wisconsin. I am writing because I am going to be doing an externship in San Rafael, at Guide Dogs For the Blind, from July 2-18, 1999. I am planning on being in San Francisco during the weekends and San Rafael during the week, I am bringing my wife Amy with me and we are looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay. So if you have any suggestions could you please let me know at llerbach@students.wisc.edu.

Thanks,
Laura
